Madeira, Portugal: The Ultimate 9-Day Mountain & Ocean Road Trip

Since Bali was the first stop, we’re taking you to the next major global hotspot: the stunning Atlantic archipelago of Madeira, Portugal.
Madeira is known for its dramatic volcanic cliffs, subtropical gardens, world-famous hiking trails (levadas), and consistent “eternal spring” weather. It’s perfect for the “mixed route” we did for Bali, balancing adventure, nature, and relaxation.

Phase 1: History, Gardens & Harbor Views (Funchal) β€” Days 1 to 3

Day 1: Arrival & The Capital
Arrive at Funchal Airport (FNC), pick up your rental car (highly recommended!), and check into your Funchal hotel.
Explore Zona Velha (Old Town), famous for its painted doors, and have dinner near the harbor.
Day 2: Markets, Gardens & Toboggans
Morning: Visit the Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers Market) for colorful fruit.
Take the cable car up to Monte. Visit the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens.
The Highlight: Take the exhilarating, traditional wicker basket Toboggan Ride back down!
Day 3: The Southern Coast Viewpoints
Explore the eastern viewpoints: Ponta de São Lourenço (a dramatic, arid peninsula trek).

Phase 2: Levadas, Peaks & Volcanic Pools (North Coast) β€” Days 4 to 6

Day 4: Peak Views & Island Trekking
Drive to Pico do Arieiro (1,818m), the island’s third-highest peak, for unbelievable mountain vistas (especially at sunrise/sunset).
Begin a shorter day hike toward Pico Ruivo or explore a nearby viewpoint.
Day 5: North Coast Natural Wonders
Head north! Visit the scenic village of Ribeira da Janela to see its unique rock formations in the sea.
Relax or swim at Seixal Beach, a rare and stunning black sand beach with natural ocean pools.
Day 6: Porto Moniz & The Northwest
Spend the day at Porto Moniz. This town is famous for its natural volcanic swimming pools formed by lava rock, right next to the pounding Atlantic waves.

Phase 3: Fanal Forest, High Cliffs & Sunsets (Western Madeira) β€” Days 7 to 9

Day 7: The Enchanted Fanal Forest
The Highlight: Drive up to the high plateau of PaΓΊl da Serra to visit Fanal, Madeira’s “enchanted” ancient laurel forest (Laurisilva UNESCO site). It is often shrouded in mist, making for incredible, moody photography.
Day 8: Highest Cliffs & Coastal Chill
Visit Cabo GirΓ£o, one of the highest skywalk cliffs in Europe (580m up), for terrifying (but safe!) views straight down.
Explore Camara de Lobos, the picturesque fishing village famously painted by Winston Churchill.
Day 9: Far West & Departure

Drive to the far west point, Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse, for dramatic coastal panoramas before heading back to Funchal for your flight.

3. Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts: Madeira is one of Europe’s most versatile hidden gems because it condenses so many contrasting landscapes into a single, compact island. You can literally hike through lush misty rainforests in the morning and soak in seaside lava pools by the afternoon. If you’re planning a trip, renting a car is the best way to explore at your own paceβ€”just be prepared for winding mountain roads and unforgettable views around every single turn!
